TACKLING FREQUENT BABY GATE INSTALLATION CHALLENGES
CRUCIAL INSTALLATION DISCLAIMER
These installations require a specific level of expertise; attempting this task without professional assistance could lead to potential hazards and unexpected expenses.
By engaging with this article, you acknowledge that you have read and accepted the terms and conditions specified here: Website Terms & Conditions.
The following examples highlight various challenges I have encountered during installations, which may reflect your own experiences and offer valuable solutions.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 1: DEALING WITH UNEVEN SURFACES
RESOLVING THE ISSUE OF UNEVEN SURFACES

-
- Measure the widest point at the top to determine the required size for the gate and any extensions. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING GUIDELINES).
- Once you have the gates/extensions, use an angle grinder equipped with a metal/aluminium disc to cut the gate accurately, adhering to the measurements illustrated in the reference images above.
- Remove the plastic component from the section you plan to cut and insert it into the modified area of the gate to ensure the proper fitting of the tension knob.
- This process will be clearer once you have the gate in hand.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 2: ATTACHING TO A SKEW WALL
ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGE OF ATTACHING TO A SKEW WALL

-
- Ensure that the gate/extensions are ready for installation.
- Use Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps and create a level surface on the wall.
- Allow the Putty to cure thoroughly BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to securely attach the gate using pressure.
- Do not rely on the gate for safety until all procedures are completed and the gate has been tested for stability.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 3: OUTDOOR INSTALLATION OF BABY GATES
ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGE OF INSTALLING A BABY GATE OUTDOORS
While installing baby gates outdoors can be a quick and economical solution, it may also void the warranty on these gates.

I recommend considering outdoor installations of baby gates only as a temporary and cost-effective solution. This may risk voiding your warranty on the gates.
-
- Baby gates are specifically designed for indoor use and are not suitable for outdoor conditions due to potential exposure to adverse weather.
- This limitation is clearly outlined in the warranty documentation that accompanies the product.
- Failure to comply with warranty conditions will lead to the loss of warranty coverage.
For a durable solution, consider enlisting a contractor who specialises in security or latch gates. While this option may entail higher costs, it offers the best approach.
PREPARING THE BABY GATE AND EXTENSIONS FOR OUTDOOR USE:
Disclaimer: None of these measures guarantee complete rust protection; however, they aim to extend the lifespan of the gate in South African weather conditions.
Regular treatment every 1-2 months can significantly lower the risk of rust.
To minimise rust and moisture accumulation, adhere to these guidelines:
-
- Before installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover surface areas at the base as well.
- Drill holes at the bottom of the gate using an 8mm steel drill bit. This allows for water drainage and prevents rust from forming inside the hollow gate, where moisture may accumulate at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. The holes will provide ventilation to prevent moisture build-up.
- Apply a light coat of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover – Satin Clear 340g, available at takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
- Allow to dry completely (approximately 2 hours), then apply a second coat.
For existing rust:
-
- Spray the affected areas with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g, following the product instructions.
- Refer to the product description on takealot.com; you might need to obtain mineral spirits to clean any overspray on non-rusted areas.
- The rust reformer will convert rust to a black substance, which should then be coated with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
